Futures is for young people aged 16-24 who are available during the day to take part in a 6 month programme for personal and social development, good relations and citizenship. The young people will achieve an OCN Level 2 Award in Personal Success and Wellbeing and do 3-4 weeks of community volunteering experience. They will also have a mentor (via Start 360) to support them with any personal issues or guide them in entering into education or employment.
This project is perfect for young people who…
Have dropped out of school (or are planning to) or are being excluded for any reason
Are maybe lacking direction and not sure what they want to do as a career
Have personal issues acting as a barrier to them in class i.e. mental health, medical conditions, family issues
Want to come to Belfast Met but aren’t sure how to get there or feel they aren’t capable (This is a great taster and preparation for college life)
Young people will also get an £8 incentive payment, childcare assistance, free travel and do a lot of fun outdoor activities, events and overnight residentials. These incentives do not affect benefits in any way.
If a young person is on JSA, it will not be affected, they can sign by post and their 3 actively seeking work activities will be covered by 3 days attendance on this programme.
The participants will also be enrolled as a Belfast Met student, get a student card for discounts and have full access to Belfast Met campuses. We also can do taster sessions or introduce participants to future courses in the Belfast Met before applying.
Eligibility – Young people can take part as long as they are 16-24 and free during the day for 3 days per week. They can be working or studying part time alongside this programme.
Refugees and asylum seekers are also eligible for the programme however asylum seekers cannot receive the £8 per day payment (but they can get everything else!)
